Welcome to the fourth week of the third session in the Journey studio!
The main project the Falcons were competing in this week was planning their field trip. If you look at the weekly photos, you will see the beautiful flyers they created in Canva. On Wednesday, we had a long discussion when each Falcon shared their pitch and tried to convince everyone to choose their idea. After the first vote, two ideas were selected for the next round: Time Mission in Palisade Mall and The Bubble Experience in Amercian Dream. We will have our final vote on Monday to decide the final destination!
The learners gave each other six-trait-critique for Genre and revised their myth accordingly. As part of the process, the Falcons must force-rank the following traits for the piece they are critiquing and give warm and cool feedback for each trait: Idea Development, organization, Word Choice, Voice, Conventions, and Sentence Fluency. This process is one of the fundamental tools we use in AABC to improve writing, and the learners are getting more comfortable with it.
For civ, we discussed Socrates' philosophy. The question we debated was: Early Greeks introduced many of the biggest questions in philosophy:
What is reality? Is it the material world we can touch and see, or more about ideas and the spiritual world?
How do we know what is true? Does this come from the senses or the mind?
How should we behave? Should we do what pleases us, or is life an epic battle between good and evil?
What is beauty, and where does it come from? Does true beauty come from nature or man's imagination?
During the morning launch on Tuesday, the learners planned their exhibition. Thursday’s morning launch was around the importance of failure. One of the questions that sparked a great discussion was: Which step in the process of learning from failure is most important?
Reflecting on what went wrong, Asking others for advice on how to improve, Setting a new goal and trying again, or Something else?
I encourage you to continue this discussion at home and share your perspective with your Falcon!
Next week, the learners will have the opportunity to lead the studio by themselves for three day,s and we can not wait to see them thrive!
