Hello, Discovery families!

This week was full of creativity, learning, and hands-on activities in Discovery! We worked on our Carnival Quest projects, created our Hero Boards, played math games, explored art, and enjoyed a fun day at Alpine. Here’s what we’ve been up to!

Quest: Getting Ready for Carnival!

For Quest, we’ve been working hard on Carnival Quest, where you’ll get to be our customers at next week’s Exhibition!

We’re working in different groups to prepare everything for the big event. Some learners are creating food booths, while others are planning rides and games, including an Angry Waffles game and a scooter ride.

There will also be delicious treats such as hot chocolate, cotton candy, and popcorn. Everyone has been putting a lot of effort into preparing their booths, and we’re excited to share everything with you at the Carnival next week!

Writers’ Workshop: Creating Our Hero Boards

During Writers’ Workshop (WW), we’ve been exploring our personal “monsters” and heroes.

We wrote about challenges such as the monster of resistance, distraction, and victimhood, as well as a monster of our own choice. Then we explored what it means to be a hero and how mentors and allies can help us along the way. We also reflected on an important question: What makes you who you are?

Once we finished writing, we created our Hero Boards! Everyone got a poster board to decorate with pictures of themselves, friends, family, pets, and other things that are important to them. Some learners added creative designs inspired by their interests.

Finally, we placed our boards in frames. They’ll be displayed on the studio walls throughout the year, but first, we’ll share them at the upcoming Exhibition!

Math Lab: Games, Challenges, and Skip Counting

Math Lab is all about practicing math skills through games and friendly competition.

We usually start with a skip-counting game, counting by numbers such as 2s: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and so on. Sometimes, we roll dice to decide which number to count by. Some learners take on a bigger challenge with a game called BizzBuzz.

After our circle games, we move on to other activities involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. We challenge one another to see who can answer questions the fastest, and some learners play dice games that involve solving math problems.

We finish with an ALEKS race, giving us another chance to practice our skills and challenge ourselves!

Art: Building and Creating

In Art, we get to bring our ideas to life by making things with our hands. This session, we’ve created miniature rooms, paper roller coasters, and other projects.

We use a variety of materials, including markers, hot glue, paper, tape, and scissors, to turn our ideas into real creations. You’ll get to see some of our artwork at the upcoming Exhibition!

Alpine Adventure: Building Shelters

This week, we also enjoyed a fun day at Alpine! We worked with Zach to design and build shelters, putting our creativity and teamwork skills into action.

It was a great opportunity to work together, solve problems, and learn by doing.

We’ve had a busy and exciting week, and we can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on at next week’s Exhibition and Carnival. See you there!
