Dear Discovery Families,
Week three was an exceptionally busy one in the Discovery Studio!
Many learners finished and hung up their hero boards. Members of the tribe have been enjoying looking at all of the different ones in the hallway and learning about their peers. Some learners are still working or finishing the last details- we are all excited to see their hero boards when they are ready.
We began our first official quest of the year - Culture Quest! This week learners had discussions where they shared what cultures and traditions are part of their families. Learners were excited to see what they had in common and hear about traditions that they had never known about. They were all VERY excited to talk about food. Learners explored their family tree and their favorite traditions, and had the opportunity to suggest challenges that could be part of our ongoing exploration of culture.
In PE this week the learners had options to choose from brought to them by the Games Committee including kickball, track and tail tag. In the last year tail tag has become a discovery favorite.
As part of the Acton Lip Dub tradition, the learners watched and rated lip dub videos from peer Actons in our Zone. It was really fun and interesting to see what other Discovery Studios put together. Watching the videos from other studios also gave the learners extra pride in the Lip Dub they put together this year!
Rounding out our busy week was our first Alpine day! It was an incredibly full day. The learners worked with Zach the naturalist, and learned how to identify plants and trees. They were able to sample some edible plants that they found such as wood sorrel and sassafras. They participated in a plant identification game and found they had become really great at identifying plants and trees! The learners also had a team building challenge where they were….building. They used dry spaghetti noodles and marshmallows to build a structure. It was super interesting to see how the different teams attacked the challenge. Other noteworthy Alpine moments: playing with the parachute, having time with our houses, exploring the mines and the fort, catching an amazing spider, playing in the ship, discovering a snake, and coming together for closing circle.
We are looking forward to next week! Stay tuned for the Week 4 Newsletter which will be written by a learner on the Newsletter committee. :)
