Hello, parents of the Journey Studio! This week, the Studio made batteries in Quest, explored perspective and verb tenses in Genre, and enjoyed a super fun visit from another Journey studio!
Genre
In Genre this week, we dove into verb tenses—present, past, future, present perfect, and more. We also studied point of view, including second person, first person, third person, third person limited, third person omniscient, and third person dramatic.
Learners received feedback on their story ideas and selected the point of view they will use in their writing. It was a productive and creative week in Genre!
Quest
In Quest, we participated in the Launch Competition.Congratulations to Shelly, Nina, Ella, and Cora for winning!
We also created homemade batteries using coins, potatoes, and citrus fruits, measuring the voltage output of each. The next day, learners built any batteries they hadn’t tried yet, comparing how each type performed.
Civ
This week in Civ, we learned about Louis XIV and the Treaty of Westphalia.
One of the questions discussed was:“Imagine you are Louis XIV, who became king at nine years old. When Cardinal Mazarin dies, do you appoint a new First Minister with experience—even if you lose some control—or take over the government yourself with no restraints?”
In our second Civ session, we explored the Thirty Years' War, which began as a conflict between Christian sects. Learners reflected on this question:“As a citizen of Europe, what would have mattered most to you about the Westphalia Treaty?”
The overall consensus was:"Finally, the wars are over—for now. I’m relieved to gather with others of my religion and worship in peace. My countrymen and I can now unite to protect our land and our economic interests under our own political leader, rather than a distant emperor.”
Visit from Another Acton
We had a wonderful visit from Acton Lakeside this week! They participated in our Civ discussions, and after Arete’a gave them a tour of our school, we showed them our Town Hall. It was a great experience for everyone involved.
This was a jam-packed and exciting week! Come back next week to hear more about the adventures happening in Journey.
