Launch Pad: Session 1, Week 5

Welcome to the fifth week of the first session’s Launchpad Newsletter!

This week in Genre, we wrote yet another post for our NGA blog. We focused on the Hero’s Journey and the various steps the Hero’s Journey consists of, such as the Call to Adventure and Meeting the Mentor, to name a few. We spent a lot of time freewriting, where we sat quietly with ourselves, allowing our inner thoughts to come to writing.

We started out NGA this week with Clearness Committee meetings. The Clearness Committee is a group of people who, through Socratic questions and challenges, provide support to a fellow learner on their NGA journey. They do not offer advice; they only supply the learner with the right questions, allowing their answers to guide the way. The rest of the week was spent creating an NGA plan for our next few years in Launchpad, which will be shared during the exhibition.

In Civ this week, we studied ancient Egypt and the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. We learned how important religion is to many civilizations and discussed the similarities and differences between different cultures. Here is a sample question from one of our discussions:

It was next to impossible to “get ahead” in ancient Egyptian society. Do you believe getting ahead in America today is easier or more challenging than when your grandparents were children? Is this a positive or negative development?

Quest this week was all about intention. We researched great gamblers (such as Titanic Thompson) with intention, played with intention, and reflected on our games with intention. We learned how to read our opponents well through the ‘tells’ they show, and based on our observation skills, we learned when it was best to continue and when to call it quits. Throughout this process, we definitely learned more about our opponents' tactics and tendencies. And, I have to say that I learned a lot more about myself as well.

Overall, this week in the Launchpad studio was full of observation, learning, and definitely a lot of fun. Thanks for reading.
