This week, we did something unlike any other week in the history of AABC: the Launchpad took a trip to Guatemala City!!! This trip consisted of four days, and during this time, we met new people, visited new places, tried new foods, and, best of all, became closer as a tribe.
On the first day, we landed in Guatemala City around noon. From there, we went to the apartment on the top floor of Acton Academy Guatemala’s school. We then went to Ciudad Cayala for lunch and to buy some groceries. The night ended with making homemade pizza in the school’s kitchen, which turned out really well. We all went to bed early, as it was a long day, and we needed rest for the days ahead.
After breakfast in Guatemala City, the second day was spent in Antigua. Here, we made chocolate at ChocoMuseo and learned about the chocolate-making process, from cacao beans to chocolate bars. We visited the Arco de Santa Catalina, explored a street market full of food, clothes, and souvenirs, and saw the ruins of Convento Santa Clara, a hidden gem full of beautiful views. We spent the second half of our day in Hobbitenango, an eco-friendly park near Antigua. We ate lunch here, took pictures on a giant hand, and watched the sunset. It was a great end to a great day.
We spent the third day with Acton Academy Guatemala’s Launchpad. We had morning launch, P.D., and core skills with them and learned about their NGA process, which gave us all insight into how we wanted to move forward with our own process. After this, we all went to a park and played laser tag together, which was a lot of fun. We ended this day by returning to Ciudad Cayala, this time to a new restaurant, and walking around, exploring what this city had to offer.
On the fourth day, we all woke up at 5 am to hike the Pacaya Volcano, an active volcano that last erupted just four years ago. The hike was tiring, but we made it up to the top in about an hour, which we were all proud of. At the top, the whole city stretched out below us, and it was beautiful. We ate pizza after this and hiked back down to the bottom. Back at the school, we played team-building games with the Launchpad and made Shucos, a Guatemalan hot dog. After this, it was almost time to leave, so we said our goodbyes and headed to the airport.
This week was full of excitement and adventure; overall, it was an amazing experience I will never forget. Thanks for reading!
