Hello parents, learners, and family members,
This week was full of creativity, thoughtful discussions, and exciting projects at Discovery!
We kicked things off with Writer’s Workshop, where learners began working on persuasive writing by crafting pitches for a potential field trip. Using a planning sheet to help launch their ideas, learners explored how to convince others through strong arguments and creativity. The field trip ideas were incredibly diverse—ranging from museums and nature parks to even the movies! It will be exciting to see which option is ultimately voted on.
Next up was Quest, where learners continued diving into game design. This week, learners finished creating a luck-based game and began learning about skill-based games. During circle discussions, many learners shared that they preferred skill games because practicing can improve performance and increase the chances of winning. Learners took turns sharing their games, offering feedback, and reflecting on how to improve their designs. We also began brainstorming materials for the final board game projects—some of the ideas were very impressive!
In Civ, learners explored languages and the many different languages spoken within our community. Several learners shared that they speak another language with relatives who don’t speak English. We watched a video discussing how many Native languages are at risk of disappearing due to fewer speakers. After circle, learners completed their wigwams and used an interactive website to learn how to say words and phrases in Lenape, one of the Native tribes that lived in our local area. One phrase learners practiced was “Làpìch knewël,” which means “I’ll see you again.”
We also had Art this week, adding another layer of creativity to an already full schedule.
Overall, it was another wonderful week at Discovery, filled with learning, collaboration, and curiosity. Have a great day, and we look forward to another exciting week ahead!
