Hello Discovery Families and Learners!
Here’s a look at what Discovery accomplished during Session 5, Week 3!
Quest: Profit & Loss Week
This week in Quest, learners explored the concepts of profit and loss and learned how businesses calculate profit based on revenue and expenses. Through partner challenges and game-show style activities, learners practiced solving real-world business math problems and determining whether a business earned a profit or experienced a loss.
Later in the week, learners completed the Bake Sale Challenge, where they compared the costs and profits of selling homemade items versus pre-made products. They researched the prices of ingredients and supplies—including small details like napkins—and calculated which option would result in the greatest profit.
Writers Workshop: Business Fair Sales Pitches
In Writers Workshop, learners worked on writing and refining their Children’s Business Fair sales pitches. They created introductions, identified target audiences, explained their products, and wrote strong closings. Learners then partnered together to present their pitches and provide one another with warm and cool feedback before revising and finalizing their work.
Civics
This week in Civics, learners studied the Battle of Bunker Hill and discussed its importance during the American Revolution. They learned how American forces built a fort, how British troops attacked, and why the battle became an important turning point despite the Americans eventually surrendering due to limited supplies.
Art & Makerspace
Discovery learners also continued working on their mural project for the Makerspace wall. In teams, they created mural proposals featuring inspirational ideas, artistic concepts, and creative themes. Each proposal included plans and materials needed in case their design is selected for the final mural.
Alpine Adventure
Today, Discovery headed to Alpine for a day outdoors, including a hike along the exciting Red Dot Trail. Learners were thrilled to return to Alpine after some time away and enjoyed spending the day exploring nature together.
That was our week—thank you for reading, and have a wonderful weekend!
