Sparks: Session 2, Week 1

The first week of the second session started with a new quest in Sparks studio. In the first half of the session, we’re focusing on Nature. We talked about the different types of rocks in nature, igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. The learners created a colorful collage made out of leaves they picked in the woods. We also talked about the other trees and raised the question: if you were a tree, would you be evergreen or a tree that changes color in the fall?

On morning launches, we continue our discussions on the Hero’s journey. Our Spark Falcons are learning to discuss philosophical questions bringing their arguments to the rest of their studio mates. “If someone would tell you that you can change the world, will you need other people to believe in you, or Will believing in yourself be enough?”.

Our learners keep working on their core skills in groups, by themselves, or with a guide. We’ve added more materials for them to work with and explore.

This week we had our first Town Hall discussion! During Town Hall, the learners can write a slip or request a studio mate to write it for them about anything they would like to raise as a suggestion in the studio. The discussed topics are a request to shorten rest time and how to make sure the books are returned to the right spots.

This week we had our first DEAR time (Drop Everything and Read). Each learner picked a book, found a preferred spot, and enjoyed the reading time.

We closed the week with fun fact Friday! we learned some new facts about fruit and vegetables (did you know that carrots used to be purple and that all apples float?)
