Sparks: Session 3, Week 2

This week, the Sparks Tribe leaped headfirst into their engineering quest and writer’s workshop, diving into challenges and creativity that showcased their innovation and teamwork. Here’s a glimpse into the exciting activities that unfolded:

Math Monday: The week began with a thought-provoking TED Talk about how math is truly everywhere. This sparked conversations about real-world scenarios where math plays a critical role, with the Sparks discussing how they would tackle these situations. In the afternoon, the engineering quest began in earnest! The challenge? To construct a building from popsicle sticks capable of withstanding a mini “earthquake.” Creativity soared as structures emerged, each unique and designed with resilience in mind.

Tinkering Tuesday: The day started with a lively discussion on leadership. The Sparks debated which qualities are most essential in a leader, using these insights to elect their studio chiefs later that day. During the second core, the focus shifted to writing as the Sparks embarked on their writer’s workshop. The first step? Brainstorming characters, settings, and plots for their own picture books. Ideas flowed as imaginations took flight, setting the stage for some truly special creations.

Engineering Wednesday: The morning launch delved into the fascinating world of bridge structures, exploring their design and functionality. Inspired by this, the Sparks spent the afternoon tackling a bridge-building quest, applying their newfound knowledge to craft sturdy and innovative designs. Later, they joined the entire school for the House Cup, working collaboratively within their houses to achieve shared goals.

Thoughtful Thursday: Discussions turned reflective as the Sparks explored various scenarios, contemplating how they would respond and what they would hope for if they needed help in similar situations. This empathetic exercise encouraged deep thinking and meaningful conversations. In the afternoon, the writer’s workshop continued, with Sparks advancing to the next step of their picture books. They began writing their stories, and some even started creating the first scenes, bringing their visions to life.

Fitness Friday: The week wrapped up with partner yoga during the morning launch, fostering mindfulness and connection. In the afternoon, Sparks jumped into second core and then studio maintenance, ensuring their space is ready for the exciting projects ahead. Afterwards, the Sparks enjoyed a team-building game led by Sophie from the Launchpad Studio.
