The third week of the 2024-25 school year introduced many aspects of the regular year’s schedule, allowing new (and returning) Journey learners to adjust and get used to how the week flows.
One of the important topics introduced this week was “Deep Books.” Returning learners were already familiar with the topic from years prior, and detailed guidelines allowed new learners to begin pitching (sharing with the studio details about a book and why they believe it’ll help them on their Hero’s Journey) and reading their first Deep Book. Many excellent pitches were given and approved, while some book reviews were given from learners who’d completed them over the summer.
Moving forward, another important topic reintroduced during week three was civilization or civ for short. Civ is a mix of history, philosophy, geography, and sometimes even sociology. It allows learners to research a given topic, answer a series of critical thinking questions, and hold a Socratic discussion on their findings. Civ challenges are scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday.
This week (and this session), the theme for quest challenges is friendship. Learners collaborated on values and needs in healthy relationships on Monday, assessed their current and future friendship statuses on Tuesday, and took personal quizzes to evaluate their basic needs on Wednesday. This week's quest challenges allowed journey learners to “dig deeper,” and learn more about themselves.
To conclude, though this week took some adjusting to get used to, its outcome was a strong start for a great year.
