Journey: Session 1, Week 4

Before sharing this week’s highlights, those from Friday of last week are just as interesting:

All four studios arrived not at their usual building that morning but at a campground. This was for the first “Alpine day” of the 2024-25 year! Throughout this day, Journey learners went on a hike, played lots of games, and met up for some organized activities with their “House.” In the afternoon, Journey met with a survival instructor named Zach, who showed and challenged us to build makeshift fires and many other fire-related activities. That day in nature was an exciting change of pace.

Week 4 itself, however, also proved to be a success. The regular year’s schedule was on track!

Genre and Quest challenges revolved around friendships and making connections, but in different ways. Genre tackled strategy for the future and what it means and feels like to be lonely. At the same time, Quest got learners out of their seats and talking to each other—whether it was practicing making a first impression or learning exciting things about one another.

Many times throughout the week, Learners, not guides, led the discussions during circles, and it was exciting (and surprising!) to see how engaging and successful these turned out to be. Topics ranged from philosophical questions to historical to practical and scientific - and that variation made it easy to be interested and participate in these Launches.

Civ this week continued as usual, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the creation of stars, the periodic table, and our solar system as main focus points. These questions about the great queries of the universe brought up science, faith, and philosophy. One of the questions the Falcons enjoyed discussing was:

If scientists detected another Mars-sized object headed to Earth, that would wipe out all life, and we would have a spaceship big enough for 100 people. Would you:

  • Launch the ship with 100 people to colonize a planet but doom the rest or

  • Launch the ship with 50 people, 250 animals, and 250 plants.

How would you select the lucky travelers: Random selection, IQ, skills, political connections, or wealth?

In summary, Week 4 added another piece to this great puzzle of a year.
